Your Child’s First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends your child see a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth or by their first birthday. That way, our team will be able to monitor your child’s oral growth and development. They’ll also be able to give you tips on how to care for your child’s teeth and gums.

Our children’s dentist will perform a knee-to-knee exam if patients are too small to sit in our dental chair. During this type of infant oral exam, our dentist will literally sit knee-to-knee with you while your child lays in your lap facing you. You’ll then need to wrap your child’s legs around your waist and lower your child’s head onto our dentist’s lap.

We also ask that you hold your child’s hands over their tummy to help them hold still. Your cooperation is absolutely essential for keeping your child safe during an infant oral health exam.

If your child is older and seeing our dentist for the first time, we recommend casually bringing up the subject and framing it as a positive experience. Avoid using negative words like “pain”, “shot”, or “drill”. Our dentist will keep your child’s first dental appointment simple, examining the inside of their mouth and talking about oral health using kid-friendly language. If your child is big enough, we’ll have them sit in the dental chair for the initial oral examination.
